THE POWER OF YOUR VOICE

“Central to both the ancient world of myth and the modern world of science is the idea of power, force, energy.”  Jonathan Sacks.

In this post-modern world of white supremacy, military industrial complex, neoliberal capitalism and slick media, the individual person often feels despair because he or she does not have a well funded platform for her post doctoral, well-educated, sleep-deprived conscience.

What happens when we are told by an authority that’s hard to dismiss, we are isolated units competing for the most of what each of us wants, asked a professor in 1949. Where is the hard earned wisdom of Rumi, Jung, Solnit and Atwood in the marketplace of ideas? Where is your voice represented in the WHO or the Government of Canada? Where are the traditions of our First Nations who survived many centuries before European contact?

Even our philosophers, scientists and doctors can be thrown off their ‘chairs’ by protesters. And where are the resonant voices of our Pastors, Priests and Rabbi’s? Have we become mesmerised by power in the mainstream press? If so, what is that power? Money? Fame? Charisma? Beauty?

And most importantly how can you express your own power of conscience, knowledge, and compassion — while you live?

There are different opinions on this question. There is more than one answer for any one of us. Most of us talking mammals are not presidents or billionaires — does that mean we are powerless?

If we believe that, how can we engage in civil society without harming others? How can we use our power for change without destroying our own moral sensibilities?

There are signs that our civil society is broken and signs that some of us are broken. How can we offer support and comfort to one another?

Please come with your memories, insights, a notebook and pen. Also please bring your own beverage. There will be a short comfort break.
