*CREATIVE KIDS CLUB* (Ages 6 – 12) Holiday version: Dec. 19, 20, 21: 10 a.m. – 12; $14/day; $35/3 days; includes materials. Join Hayden Harvey for craft and gift making with a holiday theme! Pre-register by Dec. 16.

 

NUTCRACKER DAY (Ages 5 – 10): Dec. 22: 11 a.m – 2; Commons; $18. Holiday fun as the kids join Miss Mara, Clara and her Prince for some boogie time, a little popcorn & the classic Nutcracker movie. Pre-register by Dec. 20.  

 

ICE HOCKEY: Recreational games for teens & adults. Need to bring your own gear! Costs: $15/$20. Nanaimo

ADULTS – Winter 2012

 

BOATING CLASSES taught by the Gabriola Power and Sail Squadron. Details: www.powersquadron.gabriola.org.

THE BOATING COURSE: Wednesdays, Jan. 4 – Apr. 7; 7 – 9 p.m; $225, plus $20 for PCOC exam/card. Entry level, course for safe operation of pleasure craft. Learn about boat handling, lines/anchoring, charts/piloting, compass use, navigation aids, equipment, boating laws, rules of the road, manners/customs. Home study of 3 hours/week.  

*PRACTICAL BOATER*: Tuesdays, March 6/13/20; 7 – 9 p.m; $25. A refresher course for boaters, including boat handling, planning a trip & recording the plan, tides & currents, radio use, weather forecasts, first aid, safety at sea.

*VHF & DSC RADIO COURSE*: Tuesdays, January 10/17/24; 7:00 – 9:00 p.m; $85. Learn marine radio operation, frequencies, phonetic alphabet, procedural words/phrases, digital selective calling, distress/safety systems.

 

*GUITAR for Beginners*: Mon. Jan. 9 – Feb. 29, 7 – 8 p.m; $96. Group lessons with Aaron Cadwaladr who has been a teacher & working musician for 20 years, including as a member of Dinah D.’s Contraband Swingclub. Learn guitar parts, tuning, music notation, tabulature, basic chords, strumming techniques. Bring acoustic or classical guitar.

 

BADMINTON (Ages 14+): Tuesdays, Jan. 10 – Mar. 13; 7 – 8:30 p.m., Community Hall; $48 session; drop-in $6

Instructor Dave Wong is a longtime competitor, coach and tournament organizer, plus the father of 2 national level players. A program for beginner and intermediate players to help develop strokes, learn strategy, practice games.

 

*BALLET*: Wed. Jan. 11 – Mar. 14 (cancel Feb. 29) 6:15 – 7:45 p.m; GES Gym; $125 (9 weeks). Explore the art of dance with stretching, floor warm-ups, barre/centre work emphasizing technique, strength, flexibility, musicality

 

PILATES: Thursdays, Jan. 5 – Mar. 15 (cancel Feb. 23/Mar.1) 3:15 – 4:15 p.m; GES Gym; $110/session; drop-in $12. Mat based exercises with Mara Brenner to strengthen your core, improve posture, breathing, flexibility, fitness. Joseph Pilates: “in 10 sessions you’ll feel different, in 20 sessions you’ll look different, in 30 you’ll have a new body.”

 

 FITNESS classes with Lesley Standerwick; Wednesdays, January 18 – February 22; GRS office *time changes* 

 Lesley has a degree in Kinesiology, ACE fitness certification, and years of experience as a personal trainer.

ESSENTIALS: *1:35 – 2:30 p.m*; $55/session; drop-in $10. Non-cardio class to strengthen abdominals & muscles of the hip and spine to create a strong core. Ideal for those with back weakness/injury. Suitable for all fitness levels.

POWER HALF HOUR: *1 – 1:30 p.m* $27.50/session; drop-in $6. An invigorating workout to energize you for the afternoon. No music or dancey moves, but lots of cardio so come ready to work hard!

 

*BEGINNER ESSENTIALS*: Mondays, 3:30 – 4:30 pm; starts Jan. 16; $55; drop-in $10. The place to start! Gentle, overall strengthening for those new to a fitness regime, returning to regular exercise, or with specific health issues.

*A WALK IN THE PARK*: Saturday, January 14, 2 p.m. Meet at the end of Fisher Road. Join us to explore some of the main trails in the 707 park. All ages and well behaved dogs on leashes welcome. Dress for the weather!

 

KARATE (Ages 6 – 106) Mon. 5:00 – 6:30 pm; GES Gym; re-starts Jan. 9. $20 mo/drop-in $7.50. Nationally accredited Shotokan program led by teacher John McCormick. Work on various belt levels as you gain focus, balance, strength.

 

 

TEENS

 

*TEEN ESSENTIALS* Mondays, Jan. 16 – Feb. 20; 4:45 – 5:30 p.m; $42/session; drop-in $9. Core work and power exercises to enhance strength, flexibility and endurance. Come prepared to get sweaty and have a great workout!  

 

*GUITAR for Beginners*: Mondays, Jan. 9 – Feb. 29; 6 – 7 p.m; $96. Join your friends and learn how to play the guitar together in these fun, relaxed group lessons with Aaron Cadwaladr. Please bring acoustic or classical guitar.

 

TEEN BALLET: Wed. Jan. 11 – Mar. 15 (cancel Feb. 29) 4:45 – 6:15 pm; GES Gym; $125. Time at barre/centre with focus on alignment, body awareness, technique. Explore lyrical dance, creative choreography & performance skills.

Mara Brenner is trained in Danish Ballet technique, choreography, performance and theatre; costume fees extra.

GRADES 2 – 3: Tues. 3 – 4:15; starts Jan. 10. Barre/centre work; for dancers with some experience. $115/$126

GRADES 1 – 2: Wed. 3:15 – 4:30; starts Jan. 11. Focus on exploring technique, artistry, choreography. $115/$126

KINDER BALLET: Fri. 1:45 – 2:45; starts Jan.6; GRS office. Learn dance techniques with emphasis on fun! $90/$100

 

*YOUTH BAND* (Ages 9 – 13): Tues/every 3rd Thurs: 3 – 4 p.m; Jan. 10 – Mar. 15; Mar. 27 – May 31; $110/session

Details at GRS; cost of instrument rental, music books, reeds extra. Learn to play in a band making music as a group

& finish up with a concert! Tom Lee Music at 1st day for rentals, etc. Let us know in advance if you have an instrument.

 Join Tina Jones & Dinah D. from the Kerplunks for a merry session of songs, stories, learning about different instruments, musical crafts and quite simply, a ton of fun! Caregivers invited to join in the music making.   

 

*GAMES DAY* (Ages 6 - 9): Mondays, January 23 – March 12 (cancel Feb. 20), GES Gym (tbc); 3:30 – 4:30 p.m; $35/session. All kinds of fun with games – sporting games, brain games, party games; game ideas to use at home.
